Cerberus is a robust security application designed for Android mobile devices, focusing on protecting user's privacy and preventing data compromise in case of loss or theft.

Overview

Cerberus is a comprehensive mobile security solution that aims to safeguard your device against loss or theft. Offering three primary methods of access – the Cerberus website, text messages, and a feature termed 'SIM Checker', the application provides versatile means for its users to secure their devices. These options offer a range of protective actions that can be performed, dependent on whether the user has previously registered their device.

Features

Location and Tracking: Cerberus provides a feature to locate and track your phone from the official website, helping you to recover your device if it has been misplaced or stolen.

Alarm Triggering: You can activate a loud alarm from the website that will sound on your device even if it's set to silent, serving to draw attention and possibly deter potential thieves.

Remote Lock and Data Wipe: In the event of theft, Cerberus offers the option to remotely lock your device with a unique code, or even delete the contents of the memory card, preventing your personal data from being accessed.

Front Camera Photo Capture: Perhaps one of the most interesting features is the ability to remotely capture a photo using the front camera. This feature is activated when someone attempts to unlock the screen, potentially providing a photo of an unauthorized user or thief.

Conclusion

Cerberus provides an array of protective measures to ensure the security of your Android device. While it's always better to never need such an application, having it installed gives you peace of mind, knowing that you're well-equipped to handle any potential loss or theft scenarios.

Pros

  • Multiple methods of access for maximum convenience
  • Features such as location tracking, alarm triggering, and remote lock or data wipe
  • Ability to capture photos of unauthorized users

Cons

  • Requires prior registration for full functionality
  • Must have a front-facing camera for photo capture feature

Removed SMS cand CALL_LOG permissions, for compliance with Play Store policy

Many features should not work: SMS commands, SMS alerts, SMS/call backups, opening the app with the dial code, etc.

Fix:

- Update the app from our website

- Open Settings -> Apps -> Cerberus -> Permissions

- Disable and re-enable Phone and SMS permissions

Potentially dangerous permissions

  • ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION: Allows an app to access approximate location. Alternatively, you might want ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION.
  • ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION: Allows an app to access precise location. Alternatively, you might want ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION.
  • CALL_PHONE: Allows an application to initiate a phone call without going through the Dialer user interface for the user to confirm the call.
  • CAMERA: Required to be able to access the camera device.
  • GET_ACCOUNTS: Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service.
  • READ_CONTACTS: Allows an application to read the user's contacts data.
  • READ_PHONE_STATE: Allows read only access to phone state, including the phone number of the device, current cellular network information, the status of any ongoing calls, and a list of any PhoneAccounts registered on the device.
  • RECORD_AUDIO: Allows an application to record audio.
  • WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Allows an application to write to external storage.

Other permissions

  • ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Allows applications to access information about networks.
  • ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY: Marker permission for applications that wish to access notification policy.
  • ACCESS_WIFI_STATE: Allows applications to access information about Wi-Fi networks.
  • BLUETOOTH: Allows applications to connect to paired bluetooth devices.
  • BLUETOOTH_ADMIN: Allows applications to discover and pair bluetooth devices.
  • CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE: Allows applications to change network connectivity state.
  • CHANGE_WIFI_STATE: Allows applications to change Wi-Fi connectivity state.
  • INTERNET: Allows applications to open network sockets.
  • MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS: Allows an application to modify global audio settings.
  • MODIFY_PHONE_STATE: Allows modification of the telephony state - power on, mmi, etc. Does not include placing calls.
  • NFC: Allows applications to perform I/O operations over NFC.
  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting. If you don't request this permission, you will not receive the broadcast at that time. Though holding this permission does not have any security implications, it can have a negative impact on the user experience by increasing the amount of time it takes the system to start and allowing applications to have themselves running without the user being aware of them. As such, you must explicitly declare your use of this facility to make that visible to the user.
  • STATUS_BAR: Allows an application to open, close, or disable the status bar and its icons.
  • SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW: Allows an app to create windows using the type TYPE_SYSTEM_ALERT, shown on top of all other apps. Very few apps should use this permission; these windows are intended for system-level interaction with the user.
  • USE_FINGERPRINT: Allows an app to use fingerprint hardware.
  • VIBRATE: Allows access to the vibrator.
  • WAKE_LOCK: Allows using PowerManager WakeLocks to keep processor from sleeping or screen from dimming.
  • WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS: Allows an application to read or write the secure system settings.
  • WRITE_SETTINGS: Allows an application to read or write the system settings.
